What is the play about?

Brasil… Uma noite no Cairo

During the 19th and 20th century, hundreds of thousand of Arabs crossed the Atlantic ocean to Brazil searching for new opportunities. They were leaving their countries like Lebanon, Syria or Egypt with a lot of dreams to achieve. Some of these dreams came true for some of them, making them stay in Brazil forever forming new families.

Nadia is a young Egyptian woman that lives in Cairo. One day she is informed of her grandmother´s death in Brazil, where she had emigrated with her parents when she was just a girl. She also receives a packet from her grandmother, with letters, poems, pictures, newspapers and music from Brazil. Nadia discovers through her grandmother´s memories, the life of these arab emigrants in Brazil and decides to organize each Thursday a party at the roof of one building in downtown Cairo. She wants to meet other Egyptians like her, that have or have had relatives in Brazil.

Each Thursday in this roof they discover the Brazilian culture while they read letters, poems, listen to music and talk about their problems, plans for the future and their dreams… They realize very soon that their dreams are not that different from what their grandparents and the parents of their grandparents have dreamed.

Marco Magoa.
